These are men who have met the qualifications which Christ set
forth in  I Timothy for deacons, and have been appointed by the
Elmore congregation.

I Timothy 3:8-13
"Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not
given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of
the faith with a pure conscience.  But let these also first be tested;
then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.  Likewise,
their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in
all things.  Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their
children and their own houses well.  For those who have served
well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great
boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." (NKJV)

The familiar English term deacon translates the original word
signifying a servant or minister. While elders are the leaders of the
church, the deacons function as a standing committee of servants
to assist the elders in numerous matters. The narrative of Acts
chapter 6 introduces the need for a number of men to handle other
needs while the apostles continued the ministry of the word of God.
Although not named as such, these seem to be the first deacons of
the church.

Elders are in charge of the Lord’s work in a given congregation
(Acts 20:28).  To expedite the local work, elders often charge
deacons with responsibility for specific areas of work to which they
are suited.  While all members are servants, it is important to have
faithful deacons ready to carry out key tasks.
